The large massing, program, and circulation design moves were determined in response to the site conditions. Two large stair cases on either end of the site bring in people from the old museum on one side and the school on the other. The largest stair facing the Kunsthaus is also a semi-enclosed public space. The stairs in some areas are deep enough for sitting. The two stairs lead to a large internal public space and lobby area. From the internal public space you can access the museum, restaurant, event spaces, and support spaces. The overall idea in response to the site is to extend the Kunsthaus public gathering space into the new museum.
Morphological Explorations Our morphological explorations were primarily driven by trying to understand how light enters into a space and how it can begin to influence the geometry of the space. Our explorations led to the development of lightwells that bring light into the public space and the galleries. Each lightwell has certain constraints and drivers based on its relationship to the sun, program, and its relationship to the larger massing. The lightwells were developed to not stand on their own but to have a holistic relationship to the rest of the
museum. This goal led us to exploring how the lightwells could deform, attach, and immerse itself into the gallery spaces. Experiential Qualities Our morphological explorations with emphasis on light has led us to spaces that transition from regular geometry to subtly deformed and articulated geometry where lightwells occur. These moments throughout the museum spur curiosity, intrigue, and a sense of calm. The emphasis
on light and its interaction with geometry and space create an interesting spatial experience that seems to work well with a museum setting. The lightwells are colored on the inside to subtly reflect a hue of lavender colored light throughout the space.
